After paying obeisance to the gurus
who were born in Nallan Chakravarthy
race I shall attempt to narrate briefly the
greatness of our race.
The first and foremost unique greatness
of our race lies in the fact that in Srivatsa
gothra there are five sages (Rishies) as
gothra Pravarthekas (Promoters of the
gothra). Another greatness is that Lord
Parasurama an incarnation of Sriman
Narayana took birth in Srivatsa gothra as
the son of the sage Jamadagni.
Even though the names of
gothra Pravarthkas are uttered by us
while doing abhivadamandai during
Sandhyavandhanam, they are repeated
belong for general information.
Srivatsa after whom this gothra is
named was a great sage and belonged to
the race of Brighu. Brighu himself was
sage who is remembered every day while
doing Sandhyavandhanam.
Ananthanarasimhachar Srirangam
The following is said every day thrice
while doing Sandhyavandana in the
morning, noon and evening.
The sages Brighu, Angiras, Marichi
and Athri are the sons of Brahma (four
headed god).
From Brighu four sons were born who
are named as Chyavana, Veetha-Havya,
Mitraya and Vena. Chyavana got two
sons whose names are Apnuvana and
Apramatha. Apnavana’s son was Ourva.
The son of Ourva was Ruchika and
Ruchika’s son was Jamadagni. So the
gothra Pravarthakas are
(1) Bhargava
(2) Chyavana
(3) Apnavana
(4) Ourva
(5) Jamadagneya

1) Thirumala Nallan Chakravarthy
2) Nadathur �Nadathur Ammal

belongs to Srivatsagothram of

Prathivadibhayankeram annan was
the disciple of Sri Kumara
Varadachariar son of Sri Vedanta
5) Paravasthu
Conferment of titles of Nallan
and Chakravarthy
Sri Vaishnava Sampradaya was
initiated by Sage Nathamunigal who
belonged to Satamershana gothra. He
recited the “Kannninun Chiruththambu�/DIV>
Prabandham in AzhwarThirunageri and
sage Nammizhwar appeared before him
and taught him the Nalayira Divya
Prabandam and other scriptures.
Urupottur Achchan pillai who
belonged to Srivatsa gothra became
disciple of Nathamunigal Vatsya
Varadacharya was another name of the
above was born in the year A.D. 628.
The grand son of the above was also
called as Varadacharya and he was living
in Kancheepuram. One day in the morning
he went to Vedavathi river for taking
morning bath.The river was in floods and
the he saw the body of a person floating
in water. He removed the body from the
water and placed it on the bank. He
found the life was extinct the body wore
all the signs of a Srivaishnava
Paramaikanthi, so Varadacharya decided
to perform all the funeral rites to that
body. Because he did the last rites of an
unknown person the people in Kanchi
boycotted Sri Varadacharya.
Sri Varadacharya had to perform the
annual death ceremony of his father. The
people in Kanchi refused to co-operate
and participate in the ceremony. He
waited till afternoon and as no person
turned up he prayed to the presiding
deities of Kanchi (Lord Devaraja),
Srirangam (Lord Ranganatha) and
Tirumalai (Lord Venkatesa) to come and
participate in the ceremony. Because of
his devotion towards the above deities,
they responded to his prayer and
participated in the ceremony by assuming
the forms of three vaishnavas. Sri
Varadacharya performed the ceremony.
After the ceremony the three deities who
were in the form of Vaishnavas
disappeared and went back to their
respective places.

know the above branded Sri
Varadacharya as Karma bhrashta

In the evening Lord Devaraja did not
accept the worship because he had
participated in the ceremony and told the
people the that Srivardacharya is bad to
them (Pollan) and he was good to him
From that day onwards Sri
Varadacharya was called Nallan and this
became a title to his descendants.
The above Varadacharya hailed from
Sri Mushnam and this Mushnam
Varadacharya became the Kootastha
(founder) of Nallan Chakravarthy race.
The story behind this race getting the
title Chakravarthy is as follows.
Thondeman was an emperor who
was very much devoted to Lord
Venkateswara. He was the killer of
Simhada who was a hater of devas. His
city was often a hacked by Simhada and
other asuras.
Thondaman surrendered at the lotus
feet of Lord Venkateshwara and prayed
for Saving him from the attack of the
Lord Venkateshwara assured to help
him and gave him the Chakra (disc) and
Sankha (Conch).
Thondaman was able destroy the
enemies with the help of the above chakra
and Sankha.
The emperor kept the above Disc and
Conch in his palace for daily worship and
Lord Venkateshwara was without the
above for several centuries.
In Kaliyuga during the time of
Sri Bhagavad Ramanuja who established
Sri Visishtadwaitha philosophy on a stable
footing, a big controversy arose in
Tirumalai in which Saivas was began to
claim that Lord Venkateshwara was a
Siva deity and not Vishnu deity because
the basic insignias which are Disc and
Conch of a Vishnu deity are absent in
Lord Venkateshwara. Saivas was began
to worship him as a Siva deity.
Sri Ramanuja went there and argued
with Saivas was there with the help of
several scriptures that the idol is a Vishnu
deity and not Siva. The Saivas did not get
convinced of the above and still argued
that the idols of lord Venkateswara is that
of Siva or Murugan.
Sri Ramanuja with the help of the king
Yadavasa who was his disciple suggested
that in insignia of Vishnu deity which are
Chakra and Sankha and also that of Siva
which is Trisula be placed be fore the lord
in the night and Sanctum Sanctorium be
sealed. If the lord accepts Chakra and
Sankha and wears them he will be Vishnu
deity only. All including the Saivas
accepted the suggestion. Accordingly, the
above suggestion was carried out. IN the
next morning the sanctum sanctorium was
opened and all went in side. Lord
Venkatesa had worn the Chakra and
Inspite of the above some Saivas
were reluctant to accept the above and
they approached the King of KalaHasthi
which is a Siva kshetra and requested him
to restore the status quo ante in the
Tirumali temple using his army. The king
came to Tirumalai with his army and tried
to evict Sri Vaishnavas from the place.
King Yadavasa pleaded his inability to do
anything and retaliate the army of theking
of Kalahasti. Then Sri Nallan Sri Vatsya
Varadacharya came to the king of the
Kalahasthi and quoted extensively from
scriptures (puranas) to establish the fact
that Lord Venkatasa is a Vishnu deity. He
said the entire hill is very sacred and sages
used to climb the hill by their thighs and
not by their feet. The Swami Pushkarini
tank is the most sacred in the world.
The king of Kalahasthi after hearing the
above went into deep thought for a while
and then placed a red hot iron horse in
front of the temple. He asked that Saivas
there to ride the horse if their contention
that Lord Venkatesa in Siva deity is true.
Then no Saivas came forward to accept
the challenge.
Then Nallan Vatsya Varadacharya
took the challenge and then he took a
bath is Sri Swami Pushkarini Tank. He
then prostrated before the Lord and
sought his divine grace to ride the horse.
The Lord graced him and he then rode
on the red hot iron horse and came round
the temple. Then all were astonished at
this unique feet of the nallan Sri Vatsya
Varadacharya, which he achieved by
Lords grace. The Lord Venkatesha
conferred the title “Chakravarthy”on him
through the Archaka. The Kalahasthi king
got stunned and went back to his palace
with the army.
The Saivas then got convinced that
Lord Venkatesa is Vishnu deity only and
gave up their claim.

of Nallan Varadacharya came to be
known as Nallan Chakravarthy. The
places or Agraharams in which the
descendants of Nallan Chakravarthy were

Kuppam, etc.
Some of the prominent personalities
who were born in the race and attained
greatness are
1) His holiness Sri Ranga Ramanuja
maha desikar popularly known as
Kethanda petti swamy or Paria
Swamy(1808 to 1885).Abranch of
Munithraya-Sampradaya was
established by his holiness and this is
called as Kethundapetti swamy
sampradayam even today. Four
ascetics were his disciples including
Tiruvahindapuram Chinnaswamy,
Denkani Kottai Swamy and Tirupathi
2) Virakthi Raghavachariar Swamy who
was an ashtakshara mantra siddha
and who lived in Lakshmipuram.
3) Maha mahopadhya Lakshmipuram
Srinivasacharya Swamy was the
dharmodhi of Mysore palace. He is
the author of Several works in
Chakravarthy Vaibhavam and who
has been kind enough to draw a family
tree of those belonging to Nallan
chakravarthy race upto about three
generation before.
